Battle for Sweet Lady

I held a baby yesterday. A 3-day old baby. I haven't held a baby that new in maybe 10 years. My friend Mark and his husband Richard just adopted a baby boy they have named Ethan. It was actually a pretty quick adoption, apparently, taking little over a year. They went through an agency that connected them to a woman who was already 6 months along. Getting to this point was difficult and full of intrusions. Someone came to check out their home, their relationship, their finances. They were required to put together a booklet of all the reasons they would be good parents and that booklet was to be sent to women who connected with the agency. Then they had to wait. Because they are a gay couple, they were told, they may have to wait a long time. Most women don't want their kids raised by a gay couple. Luckily, they found a woman who actually wanted a gay couple for her baby. She thought they would appreciate him or her all the more. Through the agency they paid for her medical expenses, nutrition, and incidentals. Then, so that the adoption would include both dads, they drove her here from Wisconsin, which doesn't allow gay adoption. Quite a trip for a pregnant lady, I'm sure.

The birth went well (he was born Sunday) and the hospital had two rooms set up. One for the birth mother and one for Mark, Richard and the baby. But the hospital had some ridiculously bureaucratic rules. There were only three ID bracelets. One to be given to the baby, one for the mother, and then one for one of the adoptive fathers. So basically, to bathe the baby, stay the night or do any of the things that involved getting past security check-points, only one dad had an ID. The reason? Because the hospital only gives out three bracelets. Ugh.

Anyway, I'm super happy for them and I was jazzed to go and meet their new little guy. At the same time, I was a little apprehensive. I have been talking about the War of Ovarian Aggression, right? Well the most intense and fearless soldier in that war is new babies. Even more intense that mother-in-laws and friends who want their friends to have babies (two of the most fearsome!) New babies smell powdery and cute. Their lips are teeny tiny and smooth. They look around very helplessly and will sleep right in your arms! Really! Right there, in your arms! Even their cries sound cute. This one was no different. He was so tiny!

It was nice to see them so in love with their kid. Even through their very tired eyes you could see the love. I have to say, I did pretty well. I was afraid my ovaries would actually jolt or I'd spontaneously lactate or one of those frightening things you hear about women who are of child-bearing age. Thankfully, none of that happened. I know that it's not a good time to have a kid, and I don't know when it will be, but we're pretty damn poor and unsettled right this minute. Actually, seeing how tired they were made me wonder how people with kids ever manage to do anything like get through college or go on vacations or even just keep up with laundry! I think my own mother hasn't had a good night's sleep since I was born in 1977. These are the things you have to tell yourself when faced with baby soldiers, whose clothes are so ridiculously cute.

The War Within

There's a colicky baby downstairs that is doing a good job of reminding me what side I'm on in the War of Ovarian Aggression. She's been crying for about 45 minutes straight, which is impressive for someone who really just learned how to use her outside-of-womb voice. It's echoing through the alley and up to my window as I grade papers. I believe I just heard the mom say something like "I don't know what else to do," with such resignation that I am sending a little prayer to the patron saint of sweet silences. Saint Silencio, I will call him.

I bought my friend Mark some baby things this weekend at Lil Devils Baby Boutique here in Long Beach:

A "Hospital Take Out" gift box

It comes in a little Chinese take-out box.

Pearly Gray sells them on Etsy if you want your own. They come in fun prints. This is space boy, but I got cowboys for Mark's baby.

This awesome Suck It onesie you can find at Bambina Mia

M chose that one, and it really went over well!

I went to the store specifically for this onesie that I saw the last time I was there (on a reconnaissance mission, of course):

But when I went back, they didn't have it out anymore. Luckily there was one left in the sale bin. The owner was telling me that several straight couples have come in to purchase this (with kid in tow), I guess not realizing the "s" on the end of "dads."

Anyway, an awesome set of gifts for a cool couple, who hosted a night of Wii bowling, homemade flautas made with soy crumbles that were really, really good, and we topped it off with cocktails.

Dude, Wii is out of control fun. I was so into it that we went out and got one as a mutual anniversary gift to each other. I have like, zero dollars, but I just couldn't help myself. Last night was our first night with our very own Wii, and we played for hours. Our neighbors came over to play as well. I think I may have to say goodbye to the outside world at this point, because I haven't gotten this much cardio in a while and it's totally addicting. This is comedian Jo Koy's explanation of how his mom got really into Wii Sport. Hysterical:

FYI, here's what I look like now:

Friday Finds - Baby Junk

I know way too many people who are having kids these days. Or already have kids. It's an epidemic. After turning 30, my body has decided to assault me. The War of Ovarian Aggression, I call it. Now, when I see cute baby stuff, I'm all "how cuuuute!!" Stupid things like fedoras for babies make me gush and smile. I always thought babies laughing was the most awesome thing ever, but I never was into baby paraphernalia.

Anyway, with all these buns in ovens (and no, not in mine, and not for a while, no matter what the ovaries have planned), I decided to find some interesting baby/toddler stuff.

These are real gifts:

#1 I kind of want these for myself. Kitty crayons for little hands by kittybblove

#2 Cute owl pillow for a nursery by manicmuffintotes. So cute!

#3 For your lil swashbuckler, a toy sword that is made from soft and durable wood. From Little Alouette

Barking Bird Art's little birdie paintings are super cute for a nursery. This is just one:

The rest of these are frightening, funny, or silly things:

p.s. I'm not linking them, because what if one of you weirdos actually buys this stuff? I'd feel so ashamed!

Ok, what is wrong with people? Canyou see yourself strapping your kid into this?

By the time the strapping contraption is complete, you've already lost the will to pee!

Have you ever thought, gee, my baby is bald!? I should fix that. Well, don't worry, because there are fleece-lined baby wigs for total freaks and their children.

The pictures and names are hysterical.

How about this:
For just $35, you can prove to everyone that the balance of power in your home has forever changed:

Yes, folks, it's...wait for it.....the "Daddle"

These "Billy Bob" pacifiers are horrific. This is actually the least offensive one!

They have a pig snout, buck teeth, teeth holding (I kid you not) a tiny American flag, and a camoflage pacifier.

Now I know that kids are hard to handle and sometimes you have ill-timed and embarrassing "accidents" to deal with, but this seems like a really bad solution:

Yes, a personalized bottle that exclaims "I'm filled with Alexis' Pee!!" Pink for girls and blue for boys, because you don't want to give them gender dysphorea along with a fear of public urination, right?

Can you imagine trying to throw this away when you find it in your mom's attic when you are 22 and she's all "Not your pee pee bottle!!"

There are just too many levels of psychological scarring that one plastic bottle will create.

This one actually kind of rules:

I'm slacking on this blog because the semester is hellish right now, but I will be back with a vengeance very soon. And this summer, I'll be a blogging fiend, I'm sure, so hold tight.
